Wibro is an abbreviation of Wireless Broadband Internet, and foreign countries call Mobile WiMAX.

Wibro was first started by redistributing frequency of 2.3 GHz area, which Ministry of Information and Communication used as for the wireless subscribers, as for portable internet on October, 2002.  

Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Samsung electronics developed and succeeded standard of technology ‘HPi’. This is developed by net domestic skill and chosen national standard by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE), 2005. International Telecommunication Union(ITU) chose that Wibro is the sixth standards of technology of 3G mobile communication.

On the other hand Korean Government chose KT, SK Telecom, Hanaro Telecom as a Wibro operators, Jan. 2005. And June 2006, KT and SK Telecom started on Wibro commercial business service by becoming the first of the world at some parts of metropolitan around Seoul.
